Vision Fairbanks: Unanimously Adopted--Ready to Implement
The evening of August 21, 2008 was one of the longest
and most moving nights of public testimony in support of
Vision Fairbanks yet. The Borough Chambers were
packed as scores of community members testified, and
still more came to show support. The Fairbanks
community reminded them that it is a community vision
of how we want downtown to look and to function soon,
and in 20 years.

Thank you to all of you who have committed and
contributed to this process. Urged by the community's
passionate and dedicated voice, the Borough Assembly
voted unanimously to adopt the
Vision Fairbanks
Downtown Plan
as an element of the FNSB Regional
Comprehensive Plan.

More specifically, Ordinance No. 2008-30  (starting on
page 52), amends and adopts the
Vision Fairbanks
Downtown Plan
as an element of the FNSB Regional
Comprehensive Plan, as sponsored by Mayor Whitaker.

City Council  Consideration
On April 7, 2008, Vision Fairbanks
received the City's vote of support
as our community --clad in a sea
of blue-- filled the chambers to the
point of standing room only, and
spoke eloquently and most
passionately in favor of the plan.

"Together, by Promoting, Preserving & Revitalizing Downtown, we continue
to help Fairbanks reach her true potential for a bright and prosperous future for all."
--David van den Berg, Executive Director
More than two years in the making, Vision Fairbanks is a community plan to revitalize
downtown Fairbanks.
Vision Fairbanks addresses our special northern climate and
incorporates winter city design concepts.  The
Vision will bring a grocery store downtown,
streets, add pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly improvements to downtown roadways, create a
public square and green space, preserve historic character, and improve the livability and
sustainability of our downtown.

Here are 4 things you can do to get involved with
Vision Fairbanks:

  1. Download Vision Fairbanks.  Re-acquaint yourself with the plan (above).
  2. Talk it up.  Learn about the concepts and talk about it with your friends and family.
  3. Become an Ambassador. Implementation requires community input and guidance on
every aspect of the plan.  Perhaps your area of interest or expertise has left you desiring
to become a more active participant in the public process as implementation begins.
  4. Participate in the Development Standards, Street Standards, & Design Guidelines
committees actively working toward defining the needs and desires of the Fairbanks
community's future downtown street-scape and building design. Contact us today if this
    interests you.

as it takes its first steps of Implementation. Its adoption was the critical first step to begin
implementing the plan's Catalyst Projects and move forward with bringing our community's
Vision to fruition.
