A GENUINE CULTURAL OPPORTUNITY

A GENUINE CULTURAL OPPORTUNITY

Reach out to the delegates visiting Fairbanks from Alaska Natives villages, smile and say hello to these resilient and talented Alaskans, welcome them to downtown. The mission of the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) is to enhance and promote the cultural, economic and political voice of the entire Alaska Native community. We at the Downtown Association of Fairbanks are just so pleased that AFN chose... [Read more]

A DREADFULLY GOOD TIME

A DREADFULLY GOOD TIME

The time of year for ghosts and goblins and a whole lot of CANDY is quickly approaching and our very own downtown is celebrating in some dreadfully fun and engaging ways. The Red Couch is on the prowl for carved pumpkins and hopes to have a large collection on display come Halloween weekend. On Friday, October 29th, Dance Theatre Fairbanks will be presenting “The Frankenstein’s” A Show-in-a-Day!... [Read more]

A ROW OF BRIGHT BLUE LIGHTS

A ROW OF BRIGHT BLUE LIGHTS

The row of bright blue lights that hangs above the coffee bar in the downtown café McCafferty’s are reminiscent of blueberries. This is appropriate since this cool yet comfortable café got its name from June Rogers’ grandmother (an Irish, Inupiaq Eskimo, Russian lady) Clara McCafferty.  Clara was known for her zeal for blueberries. . . the hunt, the gathering, the cooking and preserving,... [Read more]

FRIENDS OF THE ARTS

We are proud to announce that the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce took notice of our association’s artistic proclivities and bestowed upon us a special recognition. The Downtown Association of Fairbanks was named the “Friends of the Arts” and was honored at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on August 24, 2010. We thank the Chamber for their praise. The Downtown Association of Fairbanks... [Read more]

A BRIGHT GREEN YEAR

A BRIGHT GREEN YEAR

The utterly original, loads of fun, downtown store Chartreuse is celebrating the completion of its first bright green year!  Sheri Olesen, proprietor, has much to commemorate and to feel good about… she has accomplished a lot and been successful.  Although there have been challenges along the way , and she hasn’t gotten rich selling vintage clothes, accessories and home spun hats, soaps and... [Read more]

DOWNTOWN’S NOT-SO-SECRET GARDENS

DOWNTOWN’S NOT-SO-SECRET GARDENS

Something Fairbanks does really right in general, and downtown does right in particular, is plant and grow and care for the most wonderful flowers. Even though our round the clock growing season is short it still takes on an epic feel that at times can seem surreal. 90 pound cabbages are common, the record pumpkin at the 2010 Tanana Valley State fair, weighing in at 424, seemed like it was about... [Read more]

UNPARALLELED GRANDEUR

UNPARALLELED GRANDEUR

Arguably the most beautiful building downtown, the old Unites States Courthouse and Post office on Cushman Street and 3rd Avenue, is being painted.  JL Properties, Inc. should be thanked for their efforts to beautify our downtown by renovating (via paint) this iconic structure. The art deco style and sumptuousness of the Fairbanks Courthouse, now an office building with a wide variety of professional... [Read more]

BALANCE AND BEAUTY

BALANCE AND BEAUTY

The attractive, thought-provoking new mural on Third Avenue is definitely more than meets the eye. Architect and philosopher David Whitmore designed his celestial mural to correspond with the angle of light on Summer and Winter Solstices. The yellow band represents the angle of the sun on June 21st, and the low reddish brown band correlates to the angle of the sun on December 21st . One can also... [Read more]
