TAX RELIEF FOR DANCE THEATRE FAIRBANKS?

Dance Theatre Fairbanks will go before the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly November 17th to seek relief from propery taxes on the old fire hall on 7th Avenue that DTF rehabilitated in the course of locating their non-profit dance school in downtown Fairbanks.  The News-Miner previewed tomorrow night’s action and you can read about it in the DTF’s own words here.  The Assembly is likely to take up the Ordinance shortly after 7 PM.

DANCE THEATRE FAIRBANKS TAKES THE LEAD

Dance Theatre Fairbanks can’t wait for a broad-reaching effort to finance  energy efficiency updgrades for the commercial and non-profit sectors. So they’re forging ahead with an energy retrofit and you can help them with a few kind words.

Dance Theatre Fairbanks chose to locate downtown and to revitalize the fire house on 7th Avenue.  They knew that repurposing the old building would mean a hefty energy bill.   Now that they have refurbished the interior magnificently, they are moving to beef-up the “thermal envelope” (insulation) and inefficient electrical and mechanical systems.

Dance Theatre Fairbanks is pursuing a State of Alaska capital request to do the work.  The Downtown Association of Fairbanks supports their request and we encourage you to send a letter of support and encouragement to Dance Theatre Fairbanks.  Support for their capital request will:

- reduce operating  costs for years to come so this non-profit can keep training our children to dance and love life;

- recognize the challenges inherent in re-purposing and occupying Fairbanks’s existing building stock;

- reinforce the sentiment among state leaders that the commercial and non-profit sectors should be the next targets for creative, responsible financing options for energy efficiency;

- keep our dollars in our community.

A recent report suggests the potential of energy efficiency and some accepted financing mechanisms used in other communities.  Read the story in the News-Miner.

2009 Annual Meeting: A Dazzling Success

As fall was fading into winter an enjoyable time was had by all at the historic Fairbanks Shakespeare Empress Theatre. The theatre, which used to show high brow movies to the Fairbanksans of yesteryear, was filled with laughter and camaraderie at our yearly business meeting which took place on October 21, from 5:30 until 7:30. A quorum was quickly reached, and the first hour was devoted to member business, including financial statements and the voting in of new Board Members.

Next, an informative presentation about the Downtown Association was given, which was followed by our 2009 Downtown Award Ceremony.

The festivities continued as people indulged in food, drink and fine conversation. Bahn Thai, Bobby’s Downtown, Gambardella’s Pasta Bella, l’asseitte de  Pomegranate, and Lavelle’s Bistro’s delicious offerings were the highlights of the evening. Party-goers also got to listen to the great jazz of Ron Veliz and watch remarkable  videos produced by Isaiah Mangum, which chronicle our downtown.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the many people who assisted us with our Annual Meeting. A special thank you goes to Hans Meyer of Fairbanks Shakespeare Empress Theatre who welcomed us into his happening space and helped us with a variety of needs. Downtown Fairbanks is certainly filled with wonderful, unexpected places and people.   Thank you one and all!
