WEIGHT PULL STAYS DOWNTOWN, NORTH AMERICAN MOVES TO MUSHERS HALL

Unfortunately, due to thin ice on the rivers, and beaver dams blocking the sloughs the dog mushing trails are not fit for the 3 days of races the Open North American would have brought downtown this weekend. This is only the second time the race has had to change venues since its move from Creamers field decades ago. Such sad news for the Open North American as well as our downtown, but let’s still give our full support to this annual March tradition!

The Open North American will be held at the Mushers Hall on Farmer’s Loop March 19th, 20th and 21st.  The ATA Annual Fur Auction will be held at the Mushers Hall at 11:00am on March 20th and 21st. To add to the festivities a large tent will be set up outside of Musher’s Hall for people selling food and merchandise- so come hungry and looking for something special.

We encourage everyone to come downtown for the Interior Freight Dog Association’s North American Weight Pull on Saturday morning, March 20th in the Big Ray’s parking lot. Registration begins at 10:15am, Handler’s meeting at 11:30am and Pull will start at Noon.  Loaner harnesses are available. This unique event is open to all dogs at least 1 year old and over 25 pounds. It is a $15 entry fee for members of the Interior Freight Dog Association, and a $20 fee for non-members. More information can be found at interiorfreightdog.com.

The downtown Parka Parade has been cancelled for this year, and the Fairbanks Arts Associaiton plans to encourage particiaption in their event slotted for next year’s race.

So show your support and head on over to the Open North American this weekend and join in the excitement… and then circle back downtown for the Freight Dog Weight Pull! We look forward to welcoming this 65 Year old Open North American tradition back downtown next year.
